NEWPORT WELCOMES WALKERS
Newport is joining over 50 communities, throughout Britain, in welcoming walkers as an asset to the Town’s tourism potential.  The interim Committee, therefore, is now organising a walk and a formal meeting.
Dale Rees, Chairman, said:  ‘Newport Walkers are Welcome, as a locally promoted scheme within a Britain wide organisation, is now proceeding to the next stage. The first part of which will be an approximately 3 mile walk on Sunday 21st November, commencing at 10.30am, from the National Park Information Centre, and finishing at the Golden Lion Public House.  All are welcome.  Please wear appropriate footwear.’
She added:
‘On Monday the 22nd November there will be a meeting with refreshments in the Boat Club at 7.30pm.  Again, all are welcome.’

NEWPORT WELCOMES WALKERS

Supporting Businesses | Where to Eat | Where to Stay | Where to Shop

Newport Walkers are Welcome is a part of a growing network of towns and villages in the U.K who are helping to support local strategies, re generate their communities and have fun whilst doing it. Walkers Are Welcome is a "bottom up" initiative conceived by the community for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors. It began in 2000 with Hebdon Bridge in West Yorkshire being the first town to gain Walkers are Welcome status in 2006. In order to gain this accreditation, six standards have to be achieved.

  • The demonstration of popular local support. Newport Walkers Are Welcome have collected over 200 signatures of local people expressing their support for the project
  • Formal endorsement of application by the Town Council. The Newport Town Council unanimously endorsed the project at their council meeting on 28th June 2010
  • Adequate marketing of WALKERS ARE WELCOME status Once Walkers Are Welcome status has been achieved, window stickers and other publicity material will be produced. Information packs advertising the project will be available and distributed through the Newport Tourist Information Centre. This website will be widely linked through the local Pembrokeshire Network and through the U.K. Walkers are Welcome Network.
  • Action to ensure public footpaths are open and in good condition. The Newport Paths group set up in 1999 to celebrate the Millennium by opening a Town Trail with way marking and Interpretation. It continues to work to keep the footpaths in the area open and accessible for all. The dedicated team of volunteers has adopted footpaths, provided training and ensured that Public Rights of way are kept open. The Newport Paths Group has a representative on the steering committee of Newport Walkers Are Welcome.
  • Encourage use of public transport. Information about Public and community transport will be available in all settings displaying the Walkers are Welcome sign. A member of the Pembrokeshire Association of Community Transport is part of the steering committee of Newport Walkers Are Welcome.
  • Demonstration of mechanisms are in place to maintain WALKERS ARE WELCOME status.
The Steering group of the Newport Walkers are Welcome project first met on 18th June 2010 following the Newport Area Hub meeting where the project was discussed. Membership of the group included representatives from Newport Chamber of Trade and Tourism; Newport Paths Group; Newport Town Council; Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority; Newport Tourist Information Centre; Newport Accommodation Providers. On 22nd July 2010, a public meeting unanimously approved the project to be taken forward to gain accreditation. The Inaugural meeting to formally adopt the Walkers are Welcome Constitution was held on Monday 22nd November at Newport Boat Club.
